The Sentinel

I have always wanted to capture the dignity, power, and intensity of a big cat on canvas. My picture of the Bengal Tiger from Out of Africa in Northern Arizona, gave me the opportunity.

The Chase

I had the most wonderful opportunity to attend the Artist Ride in Wall, South Dakota. The goal is to take pictures of models dressed in the authentic costumes of Native Americans, cowboys, and pioneers. There are also lots of livestock to capture on camera as well. This painting is of a small herd of horses running down the hill. It looked as though they were playing follow the leader and having a great time.

Donkey

This donkey was a friendly guy. Even though he was scruffy in appearance with his winter hair, his soft and gentle nature won my heart and I knew I had to paint his likeness.

Arabian

This painting is of one of the most beautiful Arabian stallions I have ever seen. I was visiting a presentation of Arabians in Scottsdale, Arizona. I was awestruck when he sprinted by with his flaring nostrils, graceful movements, thick mane and elegant black coat. His beauty and spirit took my breathe away and I knew that I had to capture his regal beauty in oil.

View From The Top

I was visiting the Phoenix Zoo when I saw this giraffe checking out the scenery. I stood and watched for several minutes as he surveyed his domaine. He seemed to be very confident and secure in his captive world. He made me smile and I decided the his earnest pose would make a simple, yet compelling statement.

Cloud Dancer

I have had the privilege of working on the Navajo Reservation and have made many friends there. While visiting my “Navajo family”’ I had a chance to snap some pictures of their horse. The afternoon lighting brought out his very unusual coloring and emphasized his smooth pink nose. What fun!

First Light

I was driving through some of the equine properties not far from my home and saw this beautiful little filly standing with her mother. She was not very old, maybe a day or two as she still retained a piece of the umbilical cord on her belly. The expression and excitement in her eyes spoke of her curiosity with her surroundings and with me. She won my heart.

On The Prowl

This painting is of a picture taken from Out of Africa and is of a pacing Bengal Tiger who kept his eyes fixed on the people watching him. I imagined that if he had been in his native land, he would be stalking his next meal.

Three Spirits

At the Artist Ride in South Dakota, I found these three horses walking across the prairie. I knew the minute that I saw them that this had the potential for a really nice painting. This painting gave me the chance to play with colors and try new combinations.

Silent Spring

The painting is taken from a picture that was shot in Pend Oreille, Idaho. It was a beautiful summer afternoon and a small herd of deer wandered freely through the grassy meadow. The doe was not frightened, nor did she try to run away. She simply stood and watched as I took several pictures of her. Later she shared my lunch with me, much to my delight. This paining was accepted and shown in the 8th Annual Wildlife Juried Art Competition sponsored by the Irving Art Association in Irving, Texas.

Catching Some Rays

While on the Artist Ride in South Dakota, I had the opportunity to visit a wildlife sanctuary not far from Mount Rushmore. I saw this huge grizzly resting on the rocks in his enclosure. Although he was the center of attention, he was indifferent to all and seemed to only enjoy his time in the sun. He was a great symbol of relaxation at its best.

Meeting Of The Minds

This painting is from the pictures I took during the Artist’s Ride in South Dakota. These two horses stood together is if discussing a secret between them. I was inspired by their obvious trust and affection for each other.

A Cup Of Love

A Cup Of Love was painted from a picture of a rescued puppy that a former student and dear friend sent me.  He looked so small and vulnerable sitting in that cup and he was so eager to give all his love to someone who would become his forever person.  This was a precious moment for capturing on canvas.

Storm Chaser

I took the picture of this little girl while in South Dakota.  As she romped through the fields, chasing the thunder clouds and rain drops, it was as if  she had just discovered the strength and vitality in those 4 little legs.  She ran and played with such total abandon that I could not keep my eyes off of her.
